Schooling in Australia has the full support of its government – the Australian Government in general, including respective governments of its states and territories.
Management and support to government schools, including non-government learning institutions are the primary task of the state and territory governments of Australia. Vocational training is its shared-task with the Australian government.
The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) supports the government efforts by being directly responsible for higher education. Proficiency in both language and maths is the department’s main thrust.
Following a three-phase model, Australia’s education system starts in the primary level, upgrades to secondary and finishes off at the tertiary level. Ideally, however, a student may opt for a comprehensive learning program which enables him to acquire more skills and university training. In this respect, a thorough education matrix may appear like this:

Education in Australia is compulsory until the child reaches the age of 15 or 16. After finishing secondary education when the child pursues a higher level, his education is now within the auspices of the Australian Qualifications Framework
AQF sets the qualification standards among schools, training centers, TAFE Schools, vocational education providers, and the higher education level. It acts as the “unifying force” behind Australia’s education system.
This three-tier level of learning is provided for generally, by two types of schools: PUBLIC (run by state government) and PRIVATE (run by the Catholic Education Office or those run by other religious associations).. Yet, many private schools in Australia are government-funded and many public schools, presumably cheaper and cost-free, do not have an absolutely-free education for all.
There are also many private coaching colleges and tutoring services available to supplement your children's education.
Public and private schools Education in public schools is basically free, except for co-curricular activities which may entail annual fees. Books, school supplies and other incidental expenses are shouldered by parents. Most public schools adopt co-education, where both boys and girls can attend.
Private schools have their own school fee matrix and receive financial support from both Federal and State governments. Most private schools are also exclusive for either boys or girls.
Why do parents send children to private schools?
Based mainly on presumptions of good quality education and stricter discipline, parents also enroll their children in private schools for prestige. Also, some parents believe in single-sex education as being a better environment for learning, so send their child to private girls schools or private boys schools.
